Have you thought about what your ideal English classroom sounds like? Would it be a room full of voices speaking English only (a monolingual approach), a combination of English and the dominant first language, in our case Norwegian (a bilingual approach), or would the students be allowed to use any language they know (a multilingual approach)? There is no general agreement about which approach is better, and there is a lack of research about how languages are actually used in the English classroom. The aim is to learn how to identify quality use of languages in English lessons in lower secondary schools in Norway.

In this seminar, we will discuss these language choices as we watch videos from classrooms, and analyse these together.

Oral presentation
In addition, Vilde will give an oral presentation (obligatory activity) about the quality of language use in the English lesson she has transcribed (S50EN02aT). Øystein and Lisbeth will offer some feedback.
