1. Saving using the database

You have to save the material you select. In many databases, you can do this by creating a free account, where you can save searches and the results of your searches.

2. Saving using Zotero or EndNote

Another way to save the results of the literature search is to export it to a reference management program. The University library provides support for the reference management programs Zotero and EndNote.

Zotero is a free, open-source program that is installed on your computer and your internet browser. EndNote must be downloaded and installed. You can read more about Zotero and EndNote on the University Library’s help pages. The programs help you to save, collect, and input your references in your text. You can also use them to remove duplicate references.

Save references in their own group in EndNote or Zotero based on whether the study fulfills your inclusion/exclusion criteria.

Tip!

If you are downloading a large amount of references, you may run into problems, as there is a risk that your free Zotero storage space (300 mb) is filled up. It can therefore be wise to remove the option to “Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when sources are saved” via: “Edit – Settings – General – File Management”.

3. Removing duplicates with Zotero or EndNote

Removing duplicates in Zotero

In the folder Duplicate Items you will find literature that appears in several instances in your Zotero library. Select the version with the most information, then click “Merge 2 items”.

Removing duplicates in EndNote

Select “Library – Find duplicates”.
Want to remove all duplicates at once, rather than one by one? Close the duplicate window (X), see the image below. This will turn all the duplicate items blue. Push the delete button on the keyboard or drag them to Trash.

Note down how many duplicates you remove (you can see how many are in the Trash, if it was empty when you began). You need this information for documentation/the PRISMA-form later.
