There are many different types of literature studies. They vary in form and purpose, and both the amount of data analyzed, and the purpose of the studies can differ greatly. Here is a selection of the most common types of literature studies:

Narrative review

Broad, selective choices of existing literature
The analysis may be chronological, conceptual, or thematic
Often lacking in specific inclusion criteria and explicit search strategies
Greater risk of bias
Usually not exhaustive in terms of literature overview

Integrative/Metasyntesis literature study

Similar to a systematic review, but is broader and more holistic in what it includes
Collects studies with different empiric techniques, methodologies and theories
Has clear and precise inclusion criteria, search strategy, data extraction and analytic process

Scoping review

Collects a large amount of literature about an academic subject, irrespective of research-quality assurance
Can be conducted as a pre-study to a systematic literature summary
Does not follow a strict analysis

Umbrella review

Collects published systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Rapid review

Resembles a systematic literature review, but is performed within a shorter timeframe and has a more specific research question
Can be harder to ensure quality when conducting
