Students will never see Ally's accessibility scores, reports or spedometer icons. Students can only use Ally to generate Alternative Formats.

Ally Course Accessibility Report

The course accessibility report is a tool located in your course menu that gives you an overview of all the content in your course, and the overall accessibility score of the course's content.

From the report you can start fixing accessibility issues using Ally's step-by-step guides.

Ally Spedometers

Ally spedometer icons

Throughout your Canvas course you will see Ally's spedometer icons, which indicate whether an image or uploaded document has issues that need to be fixed. The spedometers are found in:

Modules
Files
Pictures in published Canvas pages

The spedometer colors are based on Ally's own accessibility scores, which determine the severity of issues in each file and are based on the international accessibility standard WCAG 2.1 AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) which is the legal minimum standard (uutilysnet.no, in Norwegian) for the public sector in Norway. A low score indicates the file has severe or multiple accessibility issues; a high score means there are minor or no accessibility issues. For accessibility scores less than 100 percent, Ally gives you suggestions for improving the accessibility of the file.

Low (0-33%): Needs help! There are severe accessibility issues.
Medium (34-66%): A little better. The file is somewhat accessible and needs improvement.
High (67-99%): Almost there. The file is accessible but more improvements are possible.
Perfect (100%): Perfect! Ally didn't identify any accessibility issues but further improvements may still be possible.

Ally's Accessibility Checker in the Rich Text Editor

When you edit a Page, Assignment, Discussion, Announcement, Quiz or Syllabus in Canvas, you will see Ally's Accessibility Checker next to the Rich Text Editor menu.

Click on the score to see Ally's step-by-step guides on how to improve the webpage.

Alternative formats

Both students and employees can generate alternative formats anywhere they see the Alternative Formats icon in Canvas. It is possible to de-activate alternative formats for single files, if necessary.
